Choosing a Classroom Panel Your Teachers Will Actually Use

Interactive flat panels for Indian schools cost approximately ₹1.75 lakh to ₹3.10 lakh for a 65 inch model, ₹2.45 lakh to ₹4.20 lakh for 75 inch, and ₹3.80 lakh to ₹6.60 lakh for 86 inch. For a standard classroom, 75 inch is the right starting point. Not 65, which is too small for the back row in most rooms, and not 86 unless your room genuinely warrants it.

But the specification that determines whether this purchase succeeds is not on any datasheet. Panels fail in schools for one reason far more often than any other: teachers stop using them. A panel used twice a week by three teachers is a more expensive mistake than buying nothing. This guide covers the pricing and the specs, and then the part most vendors skip.

Getting the size right

Size is the decision schools most often get wrong, usually by buying smaller to fit more classrooms into a budget. The result is a panel the back two rows cannot read, which guarantees low usage.

A practical rule: the furthest student should sit no more than roughly six times the screen height away. Applied to real classrooms, that produces this:

If your budget forces a choice between fewer 75 inch panels and more 65 inch panels, take the fewer larger ones and phase the rollout. A correctly sized panel in eight classrooms beats an undersized one in twelve, because the undersized ones will not get used.

For rooms beyond panel range, an active LED wall is the appropriate technology rather than stretching a panel past its viewing distance.

The spread within each size is wide, and it is not arbitrary. What separates a ₹2.45 lakh 75 inch panel from a ₹4.20 lakh one is usually some combination of panel glass quality, Android processor and memory, touch technology, education software licensing, and warranty length.

A note on government tender pricing

Schools comparing quotes are sometimes shown state procurement rates of ₹85,000 to ₹1,60,000 for 65 to 75 inch panels including installation and GST, and reasonably ask why commercial quotes are higher.

The gap is real and has explanations worth understanding rather than dismissing. Tender volumes are large, which moves unit pricing. Specifications are often set to a defined minimum rather than a preferred standard. Warranty and on-site support terms differ. And installation scope in a tender may assume the school handles electrical and civil preparation.

None of that makes tender pricing wrong. It means you should compare like for like: same panel size, same Android specification, same warranty period, same installation scope, same training commitment. A quote that is 40 percent lower is usually a different product or a different scope, and occasionally it is genuinely better value. Ask for the specification sheet and compare line by line.

The five specifications that matter

1. Touch points. Twenty is sufficient if one teacher writes at a time. Forty or more matters if you intend students to work at the board together, which is where the pedagogical value of these panels actually sits. If you are buying for collaboration, do not accept twenty.

2. Brightness and anti-glare, in that order of scrutiny. Between 300 and 500 nits is right for a classroom. Higher figures sound better and rarely help. What does help is anti-glare glass, because the practical problem in Indian classrooms is window light falling across the screen, not insufficient panel brightness. Ask about the glass treatment, not just the nit rating.

3. Viewing angle. Look for 178 degrees. Students sitting at the edges of the front rows are the ones affected, and a poor viewing angle makes the panel unusable for perhaps a fifth of the class.

4. Android specification. Treat the panel as the computer it now is. Android 14 with an octa-core processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage is a sensible floor in 2026. Premium models offer Android 15 with a neural processing unit. Under-specifying here is how schools end up with panels that feel slow within two years, which is a reliable route to teachers abandoning them.

5. Warranty and on-site support terms. Three years is a common commercial standard. What matters more than the headline number is whether support is on-site, what the response time is, and whether panel replacement or repair is the remedy. A panel down for three weeks during term is a serious operational problem.

Specifications that matter less than the pitch suggests

8K resolution. 4K is more than sufficient at classroom viewing distances.

Very high nit ratings. Beyond around 500 nits you are paying for a number you cannot perceive in a classroom.

Bundled software you have not evaluated. Free licences for tools your teachers will not adopt add nothing.

Built-in cameras and microphones, unless you genuinely plan hybrid or recorded lessons. If you do, evaluate them properly rather than accepting whatever is embedded, and consider dedicated video conferencing cameras instead.

The real risk: teachers who stop using it

This is the part of the decision that determines return on the investment, and it is the part vendors are least likely to raise.

Interactive panels fail in schools through a recognisable sequence. The panels are installed during a holiday. Teachers receive a single group demonstration. Two or three enthusiastic teachers adopt them. The rest continue with the whiteboard because they are busy, the panel takes four minutes to get to what they need, and nobody has shown them how it fits their subject. Six months later the panels are used mainly to display slides, which a projector at a fraction of the cost would have done.

The hardware in that story is fine. The rollout was not.

What changes the outcome

Train by subject, not by feature. A mathematics teacher and a language teacher need different demonstrations. Generic feature tours produce generic non-adoption.

Train after installation, not during. Teachers need the panel in their own classroom before training means anything.

Identify two or three lead teachers per phase and train them deeper. Peer demonstration outperforms vendor demonstration substantially.

Fix log-in friction immediately. If it takes more than about thirty seconds to reach a usable screen, usage will fall away. This is worth solving before anything else.

Retrain at the start of the next academic year. New staff arrive, and the initial cohort has forgotten the features they did not use.

Measure usage. Most panels report it. If a classroom shows near-zero use after a term, that is a training problem to solve, not a fact to accept.

The AMC cost is worth asking about at purchase rather than at renewal. A low panel price paired with an expensive AMC from year four is a common structure and it is only visible if you ask.

Sequencing a school-wide rollout

Start with one floor or one department, not one panel per department. Concentrated deployment creates peer learning; scattered deployment creates isolated users.

Choose the department most likely to adopt. Success there builds internal demand, which is worth more than a procurement mandate.

Check electrical and network readiness before ordering, not after delivery.

Install during a break, train in the first teaching week. Training in a holiday is forgotten by the time it is needed.

Review usage data after one term. Address low-use classrooms individually.

Expand to the next phase using your own teachers as the demonstration, not a vendor presentation.

Standardise on one model where budget allows. Mixed models multiply the training burden and complicate support.

Point seven is worth protecting. Buying whatever is cheapest in each procurement cycle produces a building with four different interfaces, and teachers who move between rooms stop using any of them.

What is the warranty period, and is support on-site?

What does the AMC cost from year four?

Can we see a working unit before ordering, ideally in a school?

That last question is the most useful one on the list. A demonstration in a classroom with real light conditions tells you more about anti-glare performance than any specification sheet.
