Video Encoders

A video encoder converts a camera or HDMI/SDI signal into a digital stream that can travel over a network, be recorded, or go live to an audience. Our video encoders range is currently being expanded, and we are not listing products here until they are ready. If you need an encoder now, tell us what you are trying to do and we will advise on a suitable route.

What an encoder does

An encoder takes video from a source such as a camera, switcher or laptop and compresses it so it can move efficiently over a local network or the internet. Decoders, players and streaming platforms then turn that stream back into pictures on screens.

Where encoders are used

  • Live streaming of lectures, conferences and worship services
  • Corporate webcasts and town halls
  • Sending video from a control room or studio to remote screens
  • Recording and archiving video sources over a network
  • Feeding signals to digital signage or overflow rooms

How to choose

Before selecting an encoder, note what kind of source you have (HDMI, SDI or an IP camera), the resolution and frame rate you need, and where the stream is going. Also consider how many streams you will run at once, the network bandwidth available, and whether the same job could be handled by a switcher with built-in streaming.

For many streaming jobs, a switcher with a built-in stream output is a compact option, so see our video mixers. Cameras for lectures and events are in our PTZ video cameras collection, and screens that can display a stream are in digital signages.
